WHIO CONSERVATION
Support our efforts to protect this amazing river duck in Aotearoa New Zealand
Whio, or Blue Ducks, are an endangered river duck, endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand. They live in the fast-flowing waters of the heads of our mountain rivers.
The total population of Whio is now less than 3,000 birds, and they are classified as Threatened – Nationally Vulnerable, meaning that they face a high risk of extinction in the medium term.
We think Whio are awesome, we named our company and our packrafts after them. Whio thrive in the same places we packrafters love to hang out; clean flowing rivers in the beautiful mountains.
This is why we’re working hard to support the amazing work of the Paparoa Wildlife Trust who do incredible work to support and increase the survival of Whio.
