Environment
We must always consider the environmental impact of our everyday activities.
This includes packrafting.
Packrafting brings us many benefits. It is healthy for our bodies, for our minds, for our souls. This though must be balanced against the environmental costs of our activities.
Here are our thoughts, and what we’re doing to minimise our impact.
Relativity
If we’re going to enjoy our rivers, lakes and oceans, let’s do it in a way that is relatively good.
A packraft typically weighs around 5 kg | 11 lb. A plastic kayak typically weighs around 18 kg | 40 lb.
A packraft has less than 1/3 the material of a kayak that will help us enjoy the same experiences.
Durability
Blue Duck Packrafts are durable.
We choose to use thicker TPU fabric than other manufacturers.
While this makes our packrafts slightly heavier, they will last for a long time.
A packraft that lasts twice as long has half the impact on our environment.
Harmful Materials
We strive to eliminate harmful materials from all our products.
Here’s a run-down on our materials.
TPU
Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is the coating on the fabric from which we make our packrafts.
TPU has been shown to be highly biodegradable when in a granular form (think micro-plastics). See here for the research.
TPU is also reusable and recyclable. Check the next section.
